Preparing Content for Web Site Development

By Mark Huesman

You’ve probably heard stories from a few friends about their Web site not turning out as expected. There are various reasons to why some people’s expectations aren't met. In many instances, it's due to inadequate content preparation and being unable to effectively communicate your vision to your web designer.

Putting Web site content before design; I’ll admit the concept used to sound a little foreign to me. I’m more of the “let’s just get it done” attitude. But after being thrust into the position of a Web site designer and planner, I’ve found that content writing and planning is a crucial initial task.

Web site content is nothing more than plain ol’ words tied together to make sentences, which then make paragraphs, and so on and so forth. Seems simple enough, but it’s the number one critical element that stalls a project.

The goal is to write copy that matches the type of site you want to develop. This is typically based on your target audience, type of service you offer and sometimes budget. Here are a few tips on how to overcome the hurdle of putting together content for your Web site.

Chili Challenge - What a Gas!

adam chili winner
Adam Wiedman shows off his prize.

Absolute Marketing Group's 1st Annual Chili Challenge brought cooks out of the woodwork to compete for the coveted Gilded Ladle of Chili Supremacy. Twelve contestants (6 from Absolute and 6 brave compatriots) faced off in a battle royale judged by all who attended on Friday, March 28th. A wide variety of taste temptations duked it out, but Adam Wiedman took the top prize with his "Smokehouse Whiskey Chili".

Thanks to all who attended and participated in the cookoff - we look forward to seeing you next year for round two!

5 Tips for Great Content

1. Proofread and Spellcheck all your text BEFORE you hand it over to the designer. You want to project professionalism for your company, and nothing ruins that faster than draft text with grammatical and spelling errors on a website.

2. Use graphics to reinforce, elaborate on, highlight and sometimes replace text. Don't just add in a picture because you think it's pretty.

3. Write concisely. Nothing makes someone scan a web page faster than huge novel-length paragraphs, and they may completely miss your message. Think KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and news articles - short, sweet, and to the point.

4. Allow and plan for interactivity with customers and clients, either through a newsletter sign-up, a comment form or some other type of two-way communication. One-sided conversations don't get much attention in the real-world, and they certainly don't get much online either.

5. Don't forget your Contact info You'd be surprised how difficult some companies make it for people to find or contact them - even if they have a great-looking website. Make it as easy as possible for someone to go from finding you online to finding you in the real-world.
